Honoring his belief that personalized cardiovascular care of the highest quality is most effective administered by a well-trained staff in an intimate environment, Dr. VanderLaan established Grand Rapids Cardiology.
Today, the independent practice is flourishing, thanks to the strong leadership of its founder, Dr. VanderLaan—supported by the compassion and expertise of the staff and the loyalty of patients and their families.

The doctor has five wonderful and successful children: two boys, a daughter in the middle, with twin boys rounding out the family. He is frequently busy participating in activities with his children yet Dr. VanderLaan always finds time for reading, cycling and catching the news. “I’m a news junky,” he admits.

Emily Vezina believes in putting patients’ needs first, which is why she is a natural fit here at Grand Rapids Cardiology. She’s compassionate, outgoing, and positive. When asked why Emily enjoys working at GRC, the answer was easy for her- “the amazing staff who always works as a team.”
When away from her “work team,” Emily can be found cheering on her alma mater, Michigan State University. She mostly enjoys Michigan’s great outdoors. You could find her running, hiking, snowboarding, or tailgating at MSU. In addition to those adventures, Emily spends her free time with friends, immediate family, and her boyfriend-quite possibly all at her favorite restaurant, Marie Catrib’s.
Naturally bursting with energy and enthusiasm, Heidi gives her all to managing the office and staff at Grand Rapids Cardiology. She loves to have fun and loves helping people—and it shows in everything she does, professionally and personally.
“It’s a busy, challenging environment at Grand Rapids Cardiology,” explains Heidi. “Because I am motivated, always striving for perfection, and love my staff, it’s not work. It’s fun and I love to have fun!”
Outside of the office, you’ll find Heidi with her family. She and her husband Josh have a daughter, Ava, and son, Chase. She loves cooking for them. Heidi is also a fan of hosting game nights and dining at Maru or Grove. Occasionally, she entertains the idea of starting a sushi-to-go restaurant so people can eat healthy on the go.
With a knack for keeping focused and paying close attention to the details, Lori excels at medical coding and billing. She’s proud to work at Grand Rapids Cardiology because “they’re very caring of both their patients and their employees.” Being someone who always tries to find the best in people, she fits right in at GR Cardiology.
In her free time, Lori likes to run with her three adult sons, volunteer at her church, and play piano and flute. Some day, she hopes to teach music to children, preferably while living in “a sunny, warm state.”

Grand Rapids Cardiology welcomes the friendly face of Brandy McConnaughey to our front office team. With her outgoing personality and big heart, it’s no surprise that interacting with the patients is Brandy’s favorite part of her day. She excels at life-long learning and brings with her an extensive background in surgical scheduling and referrals.
Outside of the office, you might find Brandy reading a good book at Wealthy Street Bakery. She also enjoys watching documentaries and spending time with her two sons, daughter, and daughter-in-law. Brandy hopes to one day fulfill her dream of serving on the mission field.

Jaymie likes the “close atmosphere and familiar faces” of working at Grand Rapids Cardiology, an independent practitioner. It’s what attracted her to the job and what keeps her loyal.
Family time is of great importance to Jaymie. She and her husband Steve have two preschool-age daughters. Jaymie also thrives on getting outdoors as much as possible. “Running, hiking, swimming, biking, snowboarding, skiing, and playing at the park with the girls.”
An avid fan of the Detroit Tigers, a frequent shopper at Target, and an artist who likes to paint, Jaymie’s evenings and weekends are active. She also plays on a recreational volleyball league and is a member of the Gun Lake Community Church.

Excellent patient care is a core value here at Grand Rapids Cardiology. This is also what our newest team member, Jordan Burman, appreciates most about working here. Jordan is a friendly addition and brings a professionalism devoted to great health care. Always eager to learn the newest advances in cardiovascular health, Jordan hopes to take this professional passion full circle by one day teaching cardiovascular ultrasound.
Work hard, play hard is Jordan’s motto. Outside of the office, he loves playing sports, swimming, and any outdoor activities. He divides his time between his family and volunteering with homeless dogs at animal shelters. Jordan also has a passion for travel and hopes to visit all 50 states

Pattie truly enjoys working at a small, personal practice like Grand Rapids Cardiology. Interacting with patients is her greatest pleasure and this is always encouraged on the job at this office.
Outside of the office, Pattie keeps busy with family, golfing, and volunteer work at The Women’s Resource Center. She and her husband are parents of three children and proud grandparents of two boys. She loves to travel, read, and occasionally dine at Reds in Rockford.
Grand Rapids Cardiology patients can’t help but notice our outgoing and energetic Mary. She loves the teamwork among her coworkers and thrives with our patient-centered care model. Mary is committed to the small, personalized approach in helping patients maintain a lifestyle suitable for them.
Outside the office, Mary is an avid Michigan State University fan and alum. She’s been known to “bleed green!” Having recently moved to the Grand Rapids area, Mary is excited to see all that West Michigan offers. She and her boyfriend enjoy traveling, trying new restaurants, and playing with their Old English Bulldog, Sampson. With a love of reading, Mary plays detective in the world of mystery and thriller novels.

If laughter is the best medicine, Ron Gulch adds the humor to office and patient life. Ron joined the Grand Rapids Cardiology team in 2016 and serves as a medical assistant. He enjoys working alongside Dr. VanderLaan and meeting patient’s individual needs.
Outside of the GRC office, Ron loves playing and watching sports, reading, and landscaping. You might even catch him at his favorite restaurant, Olives in Gaslight Village. However, these hobbies pale in comparison to his biggest love- his son. Spending time with his son and nephews are Ron’s greatest joy and biggest priority.

Kellee chose to work in the medical field because of her personal journey as a cardiac patient and her desire to help herself and others maintain a healthy lifestyle. Her compassion for cardiology patients and the office’s reputation for personalized care led her to Grand Rapids Cardiology.
“I work with an amazing staff and I’m able to build relationships with people every day,” she explains. “I chose this career because of my personal journey and now I plan to attend nursing school.” Being self-motivated and hard working, Kellee excels at caring for others as a medical assistant, and will undoubtedly become an outstanding nurse.
When she’s not a the office, Kellee spends quality time with her husband and three children. She enjoys working out as well as crafting and doing hair & makeup with her daughters.
